If a train is going west at 30 mph, and a person on top of it throws a ball 30mph to the east, how fast is it?

It depends on the perspective of the looker. To the person throwing the ball it would appear to be moving at 60mph to the east. to someone watching the train pass it would appear to be moving 30mph to the east.
